What is Individual Therapy?

Individual Therapy is a form of counseling, therapy, or psychotherapy in which clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist. This is a collaborative venture to address OCD triggers and inspire positive change. Individual therapy with a therapist who specializes in using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to treat OCD can lead to profound changes in how we live our lives and relate to others.

Is Individual OCD Therapy Right for Me?

The initial focus of individual therapy for OCD is almost always identifying what you have lost due to OCD. Typically, our OCD triggers and our anxiety cause our world to shrink as we avoid more and more things. This is one of the most devastating consequences of living with OCD.

Most of us understand that our OCD is illogical and unhelpful, and yet we continue to fall deeper and deeper into our intrusive thoughts and our rituals. However, regaining the parts of our lives that we’ve lost due to avoidance is often a powerful motivator. Thus, we begin to take our lives back and weaken the grip that OCD has on our minds.

What to Expect from Individual Therapy

At Wichita OCD Center, individual therapy sessions are an hour long. The first individual therapy session is typically focused on information sharing by both the client and the therapist. The client will talk about what inspired them to seek therapy. The therapist, on the other hand, will go over his or her educational background and therapy style.

Together, the client and therapist will then set goals for therapy and establish a mutually agreed upon time and frequency to meet. In some cases, short term therapy consisting of ten sessions or less may be sufficient for the client to gain the maximum benefits therapy can offer them. However, OCD therapy can and often does take place regularly over the course of several months.

In addition to in-person or telehealth therapy, the therapist will typically design at-home practices to empower client to participate in their own healing outside of therapy sessions.

How Does Individual Therapy Work?

Individual therapy works by partnering clients with a trained therapist in a one-on-one setting. The client receives active support and practical and emotional assistance while examining and addressing past and current issues. The client and therapist work together over several sessions to focus on healing unresolved roadblocks.

David Anderson works with clients to help explore behaviors, feelings, thoughts, and values that can lead to a better understanding of our OCD triggers and themes and our ability to tolerate anxiety for the sake of moving toward our goals and living a fuller life.

Typically, sessions are held more frequently until a client has worked through the issues that brought them to therapy. Then, maintenance sessions may be scheduled less frequently, or a date may be set to draw the therapy sessions to a close.
